It so happened that yesterday, Ms Eunice declared a break at 4:40. And halfway through the break, she got a call – someone close to her was involved in an accident. Out of urgency, she dismissed the Tort class. She passed Nithya and me some notes and we were to pass them to Ms (Donna) Barclay, whose workstation is on the first floor of the Koponas building.
So Nithya and I went downstairs (our lecture hall is on the second floor). We tried opening the staff room door. It was locked. So I gently knocked on the door and cried out,
“Hello, is anybody there ?”
No response. I tried a second time. Still no response.
To Nithya’s horror, I banged on the door and yelled,
“Allô, y’a quelqu’un ?”
And finally, Ms Barclay opened the door – and she was relieved to know that I was at the door. I passed her the Tort notes, which she would later use for the class with the part-timers. We talked for a while… and then we left.
On the way down, Nithya asked me something.
Nithya : How is it that she actually understood what you were saying ?
troisnyx* : “Is anyone home” is understandable in any language, for crying out loud !
