#kingdomherts dictionary entry 3

Pemberton Building (/ˈpɛmbə(ɹ)'tən bɪldɪŋ/)

The building in the St Albans Campus of the University of Hertfordshire which houses two mock courtrooms (known as P1 and P2 respectively). The mock courtrooms used to be real ones (for the Magistrates' Courts in Hatfield). Mooting (mock trials) are carried out here, but in my case, this is where I have seminars for EU law.

Now, I thought I'd share this, and also because it was almost time for the seminar and no one had turned up yet, I took this video.

Now here are a few notes on what I said.

  • The unintelligible lines which I uttered here were Dieu et mon droit, meaning "God and my right", and Hon(n)i soit qui mal y pense, meaning "Shame unto him who thinks ill of it". I put the second 'n' in honni in brackets because the actual emblem spells it as honi, which is Middle French - current French spelling is honni.
  • I had said that the courts were known as the Curia Regis, literally meaning the "King's Courts". They were called this from some time after 1066, after the Norman conquest, but we now know them as the judicial arm of government.

I had genuinely recorded this with hopes that it'd be something substantial - not just filler material. Now in my Soapbox equivalent of this post, I imagine someone just wasn't interested in all this (it was rated down by a great deal, for some reason), and more feedback had been given to the articles which involved partying, drinking and flirting. Whilst I am aware of this situation and I do not complain about the ratings I receive in turn, I must admit that :

  1. I am not all that. Take it or leave it.
  2. I may sound boring, but when I look around me it seems that I'm one of the few exceptions to the noisy atmosphere that surrounds us. So that doesn't make me and like-minded people boring.
  3. If I were to blog about this situation, I'd go on a ten-page-long rant on Microsoft Word. But I'm hesitating, firstly because of my structure, secondly because of where I am.
So there you have it. The humble rant um, post from a law student.
